From Geo’s Vault: An All-Original Kalamazoo Masterpiece
The Guitar Sanctuary is exceptionally proud to present a remarkable instrument from the private, curated collection of our store owner, George Fuller. This 1967 Gibson Trini Lopez Standard in classic Transparent Cherry is 100% original, unmodded, and serves as an elite artifact from the golden era of Gibson’s Kalamazoo, Michigan factory production.
Originally inspired by the meteoric rise of the young hitmaker following his 1963 live album Trini Lopez at PJ's, Gibson collaborated with Lopez to launch a highly stylized signature line in late 1964. While the Deluxe model tackled deep-body jazz territory, the Trini Lopez Standard utilized the legendary semi-hollow, thinline ES-335 platform as its structural springboard, adding a distinctively sharp, rock-and-roll aesthetic profile that has made it one of the most coveted vintage models on the contemporary market.
The Unique Visual & Structural Anatomy
This 1967 specimen features all of the hallmark design deviations that set the Trini Lopez apart from a standard ES-335. Most striking is the avant-garde, "non-reverse" Firebird-style headstock with a six-in-a-line Kluson double-ring tuner configuration—a design element Gibson famously used on this signature series just before applying it to the redesigned Firebirds. The traditional f-holes are replaced with highly stylized, bound diamond-shaped soundholes, structurally mirroring the split-diamond pearloid fingerboard inlays that dress the dark, premium rosewood fretboard.
Authentic Vintage Tone & Playability
Beneath the hood, this instrument retains its original, completely untouched electronics and wiring with no broken solder joints. It is powered by its factory-installed pair of original Gibson Patent Number Sticker humbuckers. Tonally, this guitar yields the glorious, open midrange and airy resonance typical of a world-class '60s semi-hollow build, combined with a unique warmth and organic compression that easily transitions from smooth, sophisticated jazz to a snarling, Les Paul-adjacent bite when pushing a tube amplifier into natural breakup.
The guitar plays effortlessly up and down the mahogany neck, showcasing a comfortable vintage profile measuring .890" at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th fret. Weighing in at an incredibly nimble and resonant 7.10 lbs, it is complete with its original trapeze tailpiece, ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, and the original black Gibson hardshell case with plush lining.
